You may have already seen our Scatto J-Cross 28″ (700c) Cyclocross demo bike on CX events recently, it really is something quite special. We’ve been big fans of these Belgium bikes for sometime, here’s a few key reasons;
- Lightweight – our 700c demo weighs less than a competitor’s ‘Pro Series’ 26″ & 700c
- It’s a British Cycling Road Racing (ban on disc brakes), British Triathlon, Cyclocross & MTB legal bike
- Mechanical advantage of 700c wheels in younger age-group Cyclocross & Triathlon categories
- Perfectly geared to British Cycling rollback requirements for your rider’s age category
- Year-round bike, no need for two bikes – just swap tyres for winter/off-road events
- VERY low standovers – much lower than all other manufacturers, giving small riders a real advantage
- Use lighter, better quality wheels & tyres (compared to ‘kids size’ wheel options)
- Carry components forward (wheels, derailleur, brakes etc) to their first Adult frame – only cranks & bars need grow
- Personalised-spec: 9/10/11 speed, factory-painted to order (to your design) with riders name on frame
With a 62cm min inside leg, it’s not uncommon to see 8-year olds winning on the 700c version. We build any spec of Scatto J-Cross, including straight-bar versions – popular with front-running riders on some of the most hostly contested regional Cyclocross championships, the Notts & Derby Cyclocross League and West Midlands Cyclocross League.
Notts & Derby & West Midlands Cyclocross Leagues
This year’s Notts & Derby Cyclocross League’s grids had as many as 80 riders in the U9’s (around 130 U12 riders) of which 5 of the top 6 riders were on Scatto J-Cross 28″ bikes – on a mix of drop bar and straight bar builds. Very big grids were also common on the WMCXL. Scatto riders have dominated the front rows of these grids throughout the season.
Young George Cooper was crowned NDCXL U9 Champion, to add to his impressive tally of Mallory Youth League U8 Champion, BSCA National MTB U9 Champion, West Mids MTB XC U10 Champion and Assen European Youth Tour Stage Winner – aboard his Scatto J-Cross 28″. A rider to watch out for in the future.
George says: “I fell in love with my Scatto the moment I saw it, I love the colours – it really stands out, my previous bike was quite plain. I’m not very tall and so the standover allowed me to fit a bike with 700c wheels. Everyone wants to try my bike, even the commentator in the WMCCL had a go!”

Kids Racing Build Service
Price is spec dependant. The spec can be changed to suit requirements and as our build cost remains the same – it’s up to you how much you want to spend on parts. We can create part-builds if you wish to use your existing components, or just supply a Frameset.
When your rider outgrows their current Scatto, we can rebuild the bike on the next frame size up using your existing components, taking the old frameset in part-exchange (including the superb Adult S-Cross and SCX range).
On ordering we require your child’s Age (birthday), Height, Inside Leg & Shoulder Width for correct component selection.
Components are selected to make the whole bike child-specific, it’s not just a small frame with cheap adult components. We’ve put considerable R&D time into this specification, to use the correct parts to satisfy the 3 main criteria that most competing kids (and their parents) prioritise in a racing bike, which includes;
- Function: child-specific design that’s easy to use and comfortable for the rider
- Cost: it must be competitively priced against alternatives, but outperform them
- Weight: riders always benefit from low weight (as long as it doesn’t compromise the first 2 points)
Microshift short-reach shifters and compact drop handlebars are the best for small hands. Promax cranks in correct lengths are both lightweight and narrow (Q-factor 145mm on 108 BB). Wolf/Superstar chainrings are light and reliable. These, alongside light & powerful CR270 brakes create the right blend of function, cost and weight.
Bike weight can easily be reduced (we use ‘relatively heavy’ Shimano 105 etc) but they are still light, whilst remaining more affordable. Many parents already have lightweight parts they may want to use to reduce the 28″ to as low as 7.5kg – which is a seriously light cyclocross bike. We are happy to delete or change components, as required. Its always worth noting, all components are subject to a manufacturing tolerance, so weights quoted can vary slightly.
British Cycling Gear Restrictions
If you intend to Road Race you can let us know your child’s British Cycling age category on ordering and we will specify the correct chainring, cassette and tyre size to maximise the available gearing.
