Lightweight for the climbs, but still capable of the technical descents, as found on modern cross-country race courses and bike park trails. The low standover/low stack gives riders the space to move on the techy sections and keeps their shoulders down on the faster sections.
Big wheels, latest progressive geometry (short chainstays, 67 degree fork angle) and correct fitting components create an agile, responsive and seriously fun bike. The squad has had a riot testing and developing the HUP xc in the Glentress forest, near Peebles. Fast and flowing, tight and techy, steep and gnarly - it handles pretty much everything!
With 4 frame sizes covering riders from approx 125cm up to approx 185cm tall, the whole family are in for a treat. In the case of youth riders, you can move their components to a larger frame as they grow, just like all HUP bikes. Parents also benefit from component sharing, life is simple with everyone on the same size wheels (and the same mech hangers!) plus future upgrades much easier too.
A low maintenance design with full length outer (internally run) cabling (including the option to fit a dropper post) plus the latest standards such as Boost thru-axles, 2.4" tyre clearance and a tapered head tube - ensures future compatibility. SRAM's Universal Deraillieur Hanger (UDH) also brings the ease of a widely available hanger, plus the ability to fit the very latest AXS Transmission type groupsets. Full-power shifting on the flat-top chain is awesome, we love it.
Choose from 3 colour options (including Grey, White or Silver) and 3 fork options - they are available as a frame only, frame & fork kit or a self-build bundle (with or without wheels). Every detail has been addressed to make the HUP xc the most capable hardtail, without breaking the bank. The game just moved-on...so for all the new XC kit: CLICK HERE
]]>Callendar House was the backdrop, a UNESCO World Heritage site with its section of the Antonine wall, which competitors would soon be scaling, in a bid to claim a Champs jersey. All the action was filmed by the BBC sport cameras for iPlayer coverage and live streamed on Youtube by British Cycling, with 100K+ fans watching online.
A dry week before, meant unseasonally dry weather for a January in Scotland, but don't be fooled - it was still treacherously slippy in places. The course at Falkirk always presents a challange, no matter how skilled the rider. It proved popular with the spectators, who turned out in big numbers for the Elite races on the Saturday. Frites, cowbells and great commentary makes for a quality atmosphere in Scotland, in the shadow of the Highlands!
One rider we thought could do well was Grace Inglis from Innerleithan in the Elite women, training with expert coach Paul from Ride Strong Performance, also based in Peebles. We built her bike, a 48cm HUP evo on HUP TD35 hand-built carbon wheels (all UCI approved) on the Wednesday before the race, with her first ride on the Thursday. After bikefit adjustments on Friday - it was straight into the race on Saturday morning. Locals knew this XC rider was quick...
Despite being gridded at the back, she smashed through the pack on her 7.3kg Aluminium HUP evo (mechanical brakes!), slugging-it out with the top names in the sport (on bikes 3x the cost) before finishing 3rd and a Bronze medal. What a ride! The team was so pleased to see Grace at the sharp-end, maybe with a front row seeding next time...
Rhu Fulton on his HUP evo SL has had an incredible season, already crowned the National Trophy series U14 winner, the Scottish Cyclocross U14 series winner and the Scottish Champ. So he was pleased to finish 3rd in the U14's, despite a nasty crash injuring his hand. We're proud of this young sportsman with impeccible manners, well done Rhu!
Freya Mowbray was another who's had a fantastic season on her HUP evo on the Scottish series and National trophy series (including her first podium on the Derby Trophy series round) so it was great to see her finish the sesson on a high with 3rd in the U16 girls race. We love her smiles at every race, regardless of the result, she's living her best life!
Ruan Vorster, fresh from his successful UCI races over Kerst periode in Belgium had yet another storming race, from the back of the grid in 48th, to a superb 11th by the finish in the Juniors - no mean feat in a field of that quality, but he was on his UCI approved HUP evo! He did it against the world's best in Belgium, repeating it against the UK's best in Scotland.
Big well done to all the riders on HUP wheels (...still saving up for the full bike!) including Alfie Amey (3rd Junior Men) and Jody Mills (3rd U16 Boys) plus Corran Carrick-Anderson (1st U23 Men) who looked decidedly quicker than most up The Wall, maybe down to those HUP titanium studs Dad Crawfy just fitted the night before? Who knows, just saying...
Thank you to everyone who had a chat and entered our Guess the Weight competition, 7.26kg was the weight of our 52cm Aluminium HUP evo, the winner of the frameset is Georgina Bark, please email us on the website now. As 6 entires (from approx 200) correctly guessed the weight, Georgina was picked at random from the bowl. We're also giving a £25 HUPcc voucher to the 5 other correct entrants, for being so accurate with guesses! They are: Noah White, Scott Kidd, Ollie Carter, Andy Collins & Emma Campbell - please email us on the website now too!
It was great to jump on the Podium to present to the kids from Falkirk Junior Bike Club with new HUP bikes for the clubs use, helping to encourage the next generation of Cameron Masons and Anna Kays! What it's all about, enjoy FJBC!
Well done to all the HUP bike riders racing: Harrision Hendy, Tasha Reddy, Paul O'Brien, Ben Allan, Henry O'Brien & Paul Hendy - plus all the youngsters in the support races over the hill, which we didn't get a chance to see in action.
Big thanks to everyone involved in making this year's Champs, simply the best, from the HUPcc squad: Linette, Pat, Nic & Katie plus @cjm_visuals on the videography and @innesgrahamphoto on the photography.
]]>At all levels - World Cups, Superprestige, Exact Cross or the x20 Trophee - it's big fun and a big trip. Depsite the conditions, a 100% finishing record for all our bikes. They raced on a mix of the hand-built (UCI approved) HUP carbon wheels (clinchers and tubs) running our favourite Challenge tyres.
Weather was very 'Belgian' so no shortage of mud, huge grids (nearly 100 riders sometimes) in all age categories and that fantastic Veldridjen atmosphere, only Belgium can do. Beerum, Zolder, Loenhout, Hulst & Hamme covered all levels of the sport for our riders.
Well done Noah, Ruan, Jude and Callain for some first class rides! All riders were gridded on the back row - they all carved through the field, with a finish inside the Top 10 for Noah White. These are really tough races, to be gridded at the back!
Events were very well organised, as always and the supporting parents did a superb job, in sometimes very testing conditions. Belgain beer and Belgian chocolate seemed to relax them in the evenings ;-)

]]>Every evening after watching the TdF coverage, he was desperate to jump on his little bike, in his yellow jersey. The evening after Chris’ now famous aero tuck on the descent into stage 8, Luchon, when he took the yellow jersey - was even more inspirational, Fraser copying his hero for a few seconds, before dad’s screaming couldn’t be ignored.
Fast forward 6 years and Chris finding out the parents and the little boy (now chief test pilot) who copied his aero tuck, had since created the HUPcc brand specialising in custom-built bikes for kids and small adults, was quite a coincidence!
In 2016 the industry didn’t provide much for small riders, so HUP Competition Cycling began in 2017 launching handmade Italian clothing, child-specific components, carbon wheels and CX, road, triathlon, gravel, track & MTB bikes.
After discussing their requirements, we were more than happy to custom-build bikes for Chris’ children: a 37cm (700c) HUP evo for his 7-year old son and a prototype HUP evo 24 for his 5-year old daughter. Chris specified the components for use on road and gravel, including rider-sized cranks and handlebars, plus our hand-built carbon wheelsets. Both bikes are lightweight at just under 7.5kg, with gearing suitable for the Cote d’Azur. See the HUP bikes range here...
Fraser couldn’t turn down the invitation for him and his big brother to travel to Monaco, meet Chris and head out into the hills around the French Riviera for a ride up the Col de la Madone, an old training haunt for Team Sky. Probably not the best idea after Mont Ventoux the day before, but thankfully Chris took it easy on us! During a cafe stop and some insights into the pro lifestyle, Chris presented Fraser with his signed 2016 TDF yellow jersey, which was very special. With Fraser loving his Enduro and Downhill these days, comment of the day was: “…he descends pretty quick!”. A big day on the bike in the mountains for our little rider.
After the Froome family’s first ride, Chris added “…the bikes are a HUGE hit with the kids, and there is definitely room to grow into with both of them, so these bikes will serve for a good few years!”
Big thanks to Chris for a great day on the bike and the ride of a lifetime for our superfan. It's often overlooked, the effect pro athletes have influencing the next generation. With Fraser in love with cycling just as much as he was back in 2016, the legacy is clear to see. We hope you enjoy some memorable cycling with your family on their HUP bikes.
...and yes, he's still in that 'wheelie' phase...HUP, HUP, HUP!

Since it's launch, the HUP evo has enjoyed many years of global racing success in CX, Road, Triathlon & Gravel events. Now, the new HUP evo has been re-engineered, so the game has just moved-on again...
After extensive laboratory tests and scrutiny by the UCI, Switzerland the new HUP evo in frame sizes 44cm to 58cm (alongside our carbon aero wheels) have now been awarded UCI approval for cyclo-cross, road & gravel racing competition worldwide. No limits to where this weapon can race and win.
The already lightweight, triple-butted 7005 Aluminium frame is now even lighter, thanks to its new spec frame and tube profiles, with the weight reduced 50g -140g, depending on size. We’ve also introduced new colours, so the 8 sizes of frames (from the tiny 37cm for riders approx 4ft+ up to the 58cm for 6ft+ riders) are now available in Racing Red, Belgian Blue, Stealth Black and Cool Silver. The silver HUP evo above (54cm on TD50's) weighs approx 7.9kg
All bikes are designed and built in our race workshop in Peebles, Scotland. HUP frame weights start from 1255g (using a 410g, full-carbon fork) and our hand-built wheelset weights start from 1140g. Riders are regularly surprised that our built bikes are lighter than many big-brand carbon alternatives. HUP! HUP! HUP!
For smaller riders, the HUP evo is also available in a flat handlebar build for reduced weight, increased confidence and more control. The HUP evo has been designed to accommodate larger tyres with a class-leading 55mm clearance - so it's also perfect for 650b wheels and wider tyres, creating a lightweight MTB XC or even a Gravel Adventure bike.
Build it how you want it, then let it evolve! For example, a 37cm flat bar build on 650b wheels for a 120cm rider, can morph into a drop bar 700c bike for a 150+cm rider (all on the same frame) as all components are available separately.

The new HUP evo SL is the ultimate kids/small adult carbon-fibre cyclocross frameset, using unique XXS geometry to fit smaller riders on full-sized 700c wheels...
Lightweight, low-standover and low stack, this unique frame allows younger riders than usual to benefit from a superlight carbon-fibre frame. Thanks to the use of shorter cranks, these unique frames have lower bottom brackets, moving body weight down, improving the centre of gravity and increasing cornering speeds.
With a Japanese Toray T700 carbon frame and full carbon fork, the 37cm #HUPevoSL is the lightest frameset available, using the latest internal cable technology with easy fitting for novice mechanics thanks to full length internal tubing for the cables (using full-length outers). The red HUP evo SL above (37cm on TD35's) weighs approx 6.9kg.
HUP evo SL frames come in 3 sizes and start at 37cm for riders approx 130cm tall upwards, with 44cm and 48cm sizes too. The SL model uses a slightly longer top-tube to the Aluminium version, to increase the longevity of the frame for growing kids or small adults. An addtional benefit of this, is to also make the frame perfect for road racing - a genuinely lightweight, all-year round bike.
But don't take our word for it, just ask 13yr old Rhu, riding our Yellow prototype for West Lothian Clarion. With his 48cm HUP evo SL (and a 48cm HUP evo pitbike) he had an astounding season, winning the UK's National Cycloross Trophy series (with a round to spare) and his regional series (Scottish Cyclocross Series) plus the Scottish Champs - all in the first season for a HUP evo SL.

It's no surprise kids smaller than 125cm want a HUP bike! So we've created a minature version of our highly successful 700c HUP evo, using 24" wheels for younger riders from approx 5yrs to 8yrs old.
Just because it's smaller, doesn't mean there will be any short-cuts on the specification. There is still butted 7005 Aluminium tubing, a full carbon-fibre fork, thru-axles, FSA headset and FM disc brakes, short cranks, small saddles, flat or drop handlebars and a choice of groupsets. The yellow HUP evo24 above weighs approx 8.5kg.
Like its big brother, you can customise the bike to suit its rider: Road or MTB gearing, CX, Road or MTB tyres (up to 47c), a choice or Aluminium wheels or our handbuilt CD24 carbon-fibre wheelsets on straight-pull, carbon-fibre hubs and Pillar spokes. Everything you need to race cyclo-cross, head-out into the wilderness for some Gravel Adventure or hit the local XC trails, build it your way.
No surpise they are lightwight, like all HUP bikes, market-leading weight is a given. From approx 7.3kg for a fully upgraded race rig to approx 8.3kg for a standard build on CX tyres. It's designed to fit riders between 5 and 8-years old, from approx 55cm inide leg and around 110cm+ tall, with riders able to move easily onto the first 700c wheel HUP evo (37cm) from around 59cm inside leg and around 125cm+ tall.

To compliment the HUP evo, the HUP straatrace is a dedicated lightweight road race frameset. Based on the same Criterium friendly triple-butted 7005 Aluminium tubing in race geometry, it also comes with a full carbon monocoque fork and clearances for modern 700c x 30c tyres. Frame sizes include 37cm to 58cm in HUP Racing Red or Cool Grey.
Running on disc brakes and thru-axles, it's very lightweight and can be built to the UCI minimum weight, in Aluminium! With a super low stack, standover and short top-tube, even the smallest riders can achieve the correct aero position on the smaller frames. New, wider clearances allow for hybrid tyres to tackle grass Triathlon courses too!
Running the same 700c wheels as Mum & Dad, it’s perfect for component sharing - one wheel and tyre size for everyone. The HUP straatrace is also Di2 compatible and can run either a single or double chainring groupset. The red HUP straatrace above (54cm, on HUP CD50's) weighs approx 8kg.

The HUP xc is a lightweight MTB hardtail for cross-country racing, trail smashing or adventure fun times. Born and raised at the UCI MTB World Champs in Glentress, Scotland in 2023, it's a double-butted 7005 frame with boost thru-axles and progressive cross-country geometry. A rocketship of a bike for riders of all ages, whatever the terrain.
Lightweight for the climbs, but still capable of the technical descents, as found on modern cross-country race courses and bike park trails. The low standover/low stack gives riders the space to move on the techy sections and keeps their shoulders down on the faster sections. The silver HUPxc above (15", 29er) weighs approx 9.8kg.

]]>Congratulations to Ruan Vorster of West Lothian Clarian winning the Scottish Junior title for 2022/2023 and taking a dominant win at today’s final round of the Scottish CX championship on his 56cm HUP evo running HUP CD35 wheels.
Very cold with brutal, heavy-going mud in places, Ruan lead from the whistle, with a neck-and-neck sprint into the final straight before pulling clear 10m before the line. Fantastic ride and an awesome job done. Great racing from everyone.
So you still think you need carbon-fibre to win?
During a previous race Ruan suffered a frame failure on his big brand carbon CX bike, which the brand was unwillingly to repair or replace. With many riders unhappy with racing a repaired carbon frame (even when repaired professionally) after a crash, the HUP evo provided the best solution - as a brand new frame, costs the same as a typical carbon repair.
With superlight triple-butted Aluminium, full carbon fork and progressive geo - the 56cm HUP evo’s overall weight (sub 8kg) matched his original carbon bike, even though his HUP bike uses basic SRAM Apex groupset and basic saddle/stem/chain. With simple upgrades to those components and our TD35 tubular wheelset, a further 600g can easily be removed from the bike, taking it down to approx 7.4kg, several hundred grams lighter than the highest-spec, big brand carbon race bike from Germany.
Finally, the price. Ruan’s bike is exactly half the price of that highest spec carbon race bike, without the worry of future crashes. Unlike the high street, it’s customisable for bikefit when ordering too. Watching Ruan ride away from the entire field of carbon bikes to take the Junior race win and championship title on the Aluminium HUP evo...HUP, HUP, HUP!

]]>On the crazy muddy rounds of last year’s CX Nationals, our stubborn first year U14’s kept rolling on one bike from start to finish, refusing to use their pit bikes (a 100% finishing record for the whole team for the season too) proving modern disc brake bikes like the HUP evo are perfectly capable of going the distance. CX has moved on from the cantilever days. So why continue to double the costs with 2 bikes, pit equipment and even the need for bigger vehicles?
It’s pretty obvious that spiralling costs of bikes, tyres, maintenance, entries, fuel and accommodation are likely to reduce cyclo-cross participation in the short-term - which nobody wants to see. Whilst money plays it’s part in every sport (you will never stop riders arriving with £20K of kit in their motorhome!) its ability to govern the outcome should always be minimised. But in current times, its impact is likely to get worse.
Beyond the rising costs, there are other issues. The banks of pressure washers and generators at the final round or the CX Nationals last year was a car-crash moment. As an industry and sport wanting to project it’s green credentials at every opportunity, this scale of consumption loses that argument instantly. We don’t need 2 bikes, pressure washers, cleaning chemicals and 1000’s (or is that millions?) of litres of water just to go bike racing. In fact, the issue of water usage (or wastage) is likely to become a lot more political in the future, with the potential to attract widespread criticism of the sport - which may be prevented if we look at changes now...
Things could be different…what if we just use 1 bike, drastically reduce the size of pits (allow wheel changes only?) or even remove pits altogether (making it easier/cheaper to organise events and use new venues too?) and stop the use of pressure washers during the race. People need to clean bikes after the race, but they don't need the same facilities.
Cost reductions and simplifying races will improve inclusivity. Riders will do more, when it’s easier and cheaper. Simple.
The nature of the racing will change slightly, championship results will be shaken-up with more emphasis on good bike preparation and pre-race maintenance, tyre choice and running slightly higher (safer) pressures, use of tyre inserts, good line choice during the race (avoiding trouble) and mechanical sympathy. All good skills to master for any cycling discipline to avoid a DNF. Most racing disciplines don’t allow ‘spare bikes’ to be used anyway! It’s all more than possible.
“…but my young rider won’t be able to practice pit bike swaps for when they go pro?” Well that's a skill any rider can learn in a couple of hours, when it's relevant - so in reality, banning pit bikes for U16 and below wouldn’t put anyone at a disadvantage in the future.
Of course the riders with £20K of kit and motorhomes will cry NO as their financial advantage will be reduced, but we hope British Cycling will look at this now (not next year or the year after) for the benefit of the wider sport, as it has never been more relevant. As a business we have nothing to gain (in fact, we are likely to lose) from advocating #1bikeX but not every business is trying to take over the world!
What say you?

]]>New bikes are in short-supply, good job HUP bikes allow you to prolong the life of your frameset quickly and easily…so if you’re thinking ‘…the bike is looking small?’ and ‘…we need a bigger bike?’ - STOP! Measure their height and change a couple of key items - to get the next season out of their bike!
3 key components to check…
1. Change the cranks for longer ones, as their legs grow (this drops the saddle height down too) using the ’10% of their height’ rule +5/10mm, for the right length: CLICK HERE for HUP Cranks
2. Fit a longer stem to lengthen the bike (remember, if you have a Rotary seat post, turn the seat post offset towards the rear and slide back on its rails - as their torso grows) - make a decision on the new length based on the angles you are trying to achieve (usually 20-30mm longer than their current stem): CLICK HERE for HUP Stems
3. Wider handlebars are only needed as their shoulders broaden - often when they reach around 12yrs old, increasing the effective size of the bike too: CLICK HERE for HUP Handlebars
A Basic, simplified fit routine you need to regulary check (with correct length cranks fitted)…
STEP 1: Adjust saddle height (knee slightly bent, when cranks form extension of seat tube angle, HEAL on pedal)
STEP 2: Adjust their saddle position (slide on its rails) to get the centre of the knee over the pedal axles
STEP 3: Adjust the stem length for the desired back/arm angle (approx 90 degree angle from spine to upper arm)
It’s quite common to get as many as 4 years from the same frame using this method (especially on 37cm frames). For more help with general bike fit CLICK HERE.

]]>Getting away from traffic, freedom to explore new places and immersing yourself in stunning scenery are all obvious appeals. Planning trips, good navigation and learning to be self-sufficient are also very useful experiences for kids. A lack of UK cycling infrastrurcture, staycations, environmental concerns and a fuel crisis only add to the appeal.
Safe cycling routes are limited on a Road bike (you can't head down that Bridleway) often putting you in conflict with the car. On a gravel bike, you're free to ride pretty much anywhere, opening-up new routes - that's a big deal riding with kids!
When we designed the HUP evo, dual-purpose was the brief. Once the CX season was over (with a change of tyres) it could be converted for Road or Gravel. Swapping to 650b wheels, means real long-distance comfort too. But like racing, weight matters with little legs on longer days in the saddle. You don’t want to add luggage, to an already heavy bike! Hence, 1345g gravel wheels and 410g gravel tyres (big 46c) creates a race bike weight - but with off-road comfort.
Here's some inspiration when planning your family cycling adventures, from clothes to complete bikes...
If you need a complete bike, the HUP evo is the ultimate! For riders of all ages from 120cm+ (37cm to 58cm) with progressive geometry, triple-butted tubing and full carbon forks, they make lightweight gravel bikes. In fact, advances in our 650b wheels & tyres, means there is very little difference in weight compared to dedicated road bikes.
Frames have rear luggage bosses for panniers and internal cable routing to fit a dropper seat post. On Self-Build Bundles, you can choose the standard fork or the luggage fork (extra carrying capacity) or HUP 650b carbon wheels...

]]>We've really enjoyed supporting these two British girl's bikepacking exploits in the US and they are loving their HUP evo 650b bikes, especially 5-year old Rhoda - the only bike for kids this size to run the same 650b or 700c gravel wheels as Mum & Dad! Cyclocross racing, touring, MTB XC or gravel adventures, it can do it all.
Rhoda Jones is the Youngest Child on record to cycle from Land’s End to John o’Groats - 4 years, 4 months at the time. Her time of 22 days, 3 hours, 26 minutes was narrowly beaten by big sister Ruth (5 at the time) who’s the fastest by trailerbike. That's a long time spent in their #HUPcc cycling kit, but they still wear it a year later.
HUP Bikes are the first Youth specific range of competition 700c framesets and wheelsets for ages 6 to 16, for Cyclo-cross, Road Racing, junior Triathlon, MTB XC and Track racing - all developed with low standover, short top-tubes and low stack geometry. Great value Cycling Bundles and Triathlon Bundles from #HUPcc
Challenge were keen to get on-board with our ground breaking bike range, creating the first youth-specific range of 700c race bikes. Alongside the involvement of Fulcrum Wheels of Italy (and our handbuilt HUP wheels) Challenge tyres represents the final piece of the jigsaw. Perfect for our philosophy, your child's bike should be better than yours!
For 2020, we will be moving over to Challenge Tyres as standard fit on all our HUP bikes, raising the bar yet again. From their superlight handmade Cyclocross Tubulars, super-sticky velodrome Track tyres to their famous Paris-Roubaix Road tyres - our bikes will have the best, fitted as standard. Just like Thibau Nys, Katie Compton, Ben Tulett, Christine Majors, Helen Wyman, Eli Iserbyt, Evie Richards and Elynor & Zoe Backstedt, the list goes on.
Beyond the stellar lineup of official Challenge Tyre riders, we've already been using their Tubulars for some time on our prototype HUP evo CX bikes and HUP azure track bikes with considerable success. They really are world class in our experience. The move will also reduce our standard bike build weights, including the all-important rotational weight. Their seamless constructed Latex Tubes have something of a cult following too. 2020 is looking even more exciting!
