Like correct handlebar width, the Stem length is also critical for the young rider to maintain control. Along with the saddle position, this stem length forms the all-important ‘cockpit length’ affecting their body position.
To achieve the correct back angle and arm reach, a shorter stem is nearly always required, but to save costs, many bike manufacturers still use the more widely available, longer adult stems. The result is an over-stretched position resulting in less control and a child that suffers from back-pain during, and after rides.
