TeamHUP recently took a trip down to the 2012 Olympic MTB venue at Hadleigh, Essex to sharpen their mountain biking skills before the 2019 MTB race season kicked-off with Round 1 of the Muds, Sweat and Gears championship.

Our group of keen shredders (and slightly nervous parents) were in the capable hands of ATB Coaching’s John Stockwell, who has a wealth of experience in all types of cycling but specialises in MTB and has raced along side such names as Steve Peat, Greg Minnaar and the Athertons.
After an introduction and quick kit inspection, the group headed-off to the skills area to cover basics and asses the groups skill level which despite the fairly wide spread of ages, was very similar. Cornering on gravel, manoeuvring, drop-offs, manualling, front/rear wheel lifts and berm technique.
Next it was off for a tour of the various features that make up a lap of the fantastic Hadleigh course. Steep berms, dual-slalom, various rocky climbs and drop-offs with some air too. This was very useful, practical help especially for those in the U14’s doing the full course, but the U10’s loved the challenge!
The kids loved the coaching and were more confident with the various features by learning how to tackle them properly. If you want to help your little one’s improve their skills, John is able to pass on his knowledge to help them reach the next level, from beginner to expert, he’s a British Cycling coach with 8+ years MTB coaching experience.
